I get a load of press releases about theatrical productions at work. Mostly I either ignore them, or pass them on to more relevant people*. However, I just wanted to share this poster for the Wycombe Swan’s forthcoming youth project – a production of the Madness jukebox musical Our House:[media-credit name=”Jamie Sansom” align=”aligncenter” width=”415″][/media-credit]It always gladdens the heart when a design comes through that is more than just a photo with a couple of straplines attached.
From the press release:
After our magical trip through the wardrobe to the land of Narnia in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and our epic stage production of the iconic musical West Side Story, this season Wycombe Swan’s Youth Theatre start a new adventure with Our House the Musical!
A touching tale of life and love, heartbreak and comedy, right and wrong, Our House is an irresistibly brilliant musical bursting with non-stop classic hits from Madness. Our House is a musical featuring the greatest hits of the 80s pop band as well as featuring two all new songs written by Madness.
Billed as a London love story, Our House centres on two teenagers living in North London to the backdrop of Madness’ hit songs. Written by Tim Firth (Calendar Girls) it’s a modern-day morality story…or rather two stories about young Joe, his mates, his girlfriend Sarah and the night Joe commits a petty crime to impress her. After the crime, Our House follows the two courses Joe’s life would have taken had he bunked the law and made a run for it or stayed to face the music.
A young cast of 60 play a host of comedy characters who are intertwined into Joe’s life – both on the good path and bad all set to the iconic tunes of Madness.
Our House features more than 20 of Madness’ hits, including It Must Be Love, House of Fun, My Girl, Baggy Trousers and the title song. There are also two new songs – NW5 and Simple Equation – which Madness wrote especially for the musical.
This Olivier Award-Winning show will be Wycombe Swan Youth Theatre’s 20th Production and adds to an exciting list of dynamic and entertaining productions following The Wizard of Oz, Honk!, and Les Miserables. Wycombe Swan Youth Theatre still continue to astound audiences as more than 60 local young people entertain with the musical show of the season!
After a successful summer season performance of West Side Story to sold-out audiences, this fresh and upbeat production of Our House promises to be more spectacular than ever before…Put on your baggy trousers and join us for this London love story with drama, energy and lots of laughs.
Our House plays from Thursday February 16–Sunday February 19. For more details about the Wycombe Swan Youth Theatre, visit their website.
* For future reference, if you’re sending stuff to The Stage you need to send news-based press releases to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you want your show to be included in our listings – and by extension, considered for review – send the release to email@example.com well ahead of time. And unfortunately, we don’t currently have the capacity to run amateur and youth productions anyway, so apologies in advance.
* On the other hand, if you intend stuff to come to me in a personal capacity, use the contact form on this blog. Thanks!
